Henderson sits southeast of Las Vegas, pressed up against Black Mountain and the McCullough Range. The terrain shows up in the walls here. Green Valley broke ground in 1978, so those yards hold block walls that are decades old. Repairs and rebuilds are common in those tracts. Newer ground like Inspirada and Cadence went up on graded pads with fresh perimeter block. Higher up in Seven Hills or MacDonald Highlands, lots step down the hillside. Those yards need retaining walls built to hold real grade. Under all of it sits caliche, a cemented calcium layer as hard as concrete. It changes how a footing gets dug here. Most of the city also falls under an HOA, so wall height and finish come with rules.

Caliche runs under most of the Las Vegas Valley, and Henderson is no exception. It is a cemented calcium carbonate layer that can be as hard as concrete. Thickness and depth change from lot to lot, sometimes within the same yard. A footing trench that cuts easy on one side can hit rock on the other. That is why we check dig conditions before we put a price on the job.
Slope is the other Henderson factor. Neighborhoods along Black Mountain, like Seven Hills, Anthem, and Madeira Canyon, sit on stepped pads. Yards there often drop several feet from one property line to the next. A wall holding that dirt is a retaining wall, and it needs a footing and steel sized for the load. Water matters too. Runoff off the foothills has to keep moving. Drain holes and gravel behind the wall go in during the build.
Henderson housing splits by age. Green Valley began in 1978, and its early tracts went up through the 1980s. Block walls in those yards have taken decades of desert heat and sun. Mortar joints wash out and caps work loose along the top. We repair those walls, or take a bad section down and rebuild on a new footing. Matching the old block color and texture is part of that work.
The newer half of Henderson looks different. The median build year across the city is 2001, and Inspirada and Cadence are newer still. Those homes came with a builder perimeter wall, usually plain gray block. Owners come to us to add a cap, pilasters, or a stucco coat. Others want a courtyard wall out front, or a BBQ island and fireplace in back. Grading is flatter on those lots, so the work is more about finish than holding back dirt.
