How Much Does Brick Repair Cost in Las Vegas?

One national cost guide puts typical brick repair at $500 to $2,500. Published guides list repointing at $3 to $20 per square foot. Replacing solid face bricks runs $20 to $40 per square foot. In Las Vegas, the height of the work and finding a matching brick move the final number.

Should you repoint the joints or replace the brick?

Repoint when the mortar has failed and the brick is sound. Replace the brick when it is broken or heavily spalled. One cost guide says repointing only works when the damage is limited to the mortar joints. That choice moves a repair from $3 to $20 per square foot toward $20 to $40.

The same guide says to find and repair the root cause of the damage before repointing. On brick, the cause can be water, from a leak or a sprinkler aimed at the wall. We look for it before we price the joints.

How the joints come out matters. The Brick Industry Association says old mortar comes out to a uniform depth of at least twice the joint width. That is generally 3/4 inch, or deeper until sound mortar is reached.

The mix matters too. The Association says repointing mortar must be equal to or lower in compressive strength than the original. A stronger mortar can lead to spalling of the brick face. For modern brick, it generally recommends Type N.

The National Park Service adds that repointing mortar must be softer than the masonry units. A mortar that is too hard can turn a joint job into a spalled brick repair.

What do mailbox, column and veneer repairs cost?

One national guide lists brick mailbox repair at $150 to $300 for minor repairs. Major damage, like a leaning mailbox, runs up to $750. Brick veneer repair lists at $11 to $24 per square foot. The guides we checked list no range for brick columns, so we price those from the job.

Brick mailboxes and driveway columns sit close to cars. A car strike can crack the brick or push it out of line. On an insurance claim, we write an itemized estimate against the adjuster’s scope or your claim photos. The claim itself stays between you and your carrier.

Brick veneer repair covers loose, cracked or missing pieces on the face of a wall. A face that has to come off entirely is new work, priced like our new brick veneer.

Stone costs more to repoint than brick. Stone wall repointing lists at $5 to $25 per square foot, since masons chisel the curved joints by hand. Loose veneer stone gets reset on sound backing. For new stone, see our stone veneer work and what stone veneer costs in Las Vegas.

What moves the price of brick repair in Las Vegas?

Handwork sets much of the price. One national guide lists masonry labor at $40 to $100 per hour. Most brick masons also charge a minimum job fee of $200 to $1,500, the same publisher says. Height, access and matching the old brick move the number from there.

The National Park Service calls repointing expensive and time consuming because of the handwork and special materials. One guide says small repointing projects run 10 to 20 percent more per square foot than large ones. The Park Service adds that one foot of pointing in five spots costs more than five feet in a row.

Height adds cost. Repointing walls above 8 feet lists at $5 to $25 per square foot, because the work needs scaffolding. The same publisher says prices rise 20 to 40 percent for work on two-story buildings. Blocked or hard-to-reach areas also cost more to repoint.

Finding a matching brick can add time. The Brick Industry Association says locating matching brick may take considerable effort. It suggests checking replacement brick against the wall on a sample panel. Most masons color-match mortar at the job site, and a lab analysis lists at $150 to $325.

Water staining can add cleaning to the job. Valley tap water is hard from calcium and magnesium, the Las Vegas Valley Water District says. Its mineral residue forms only where water is left to evaporate, like sprinkler spray drying on brick. One guide notes some masonry needs cleaning before repair work starts.

White deposits can also be efflorescence, salts left behind when moisture in the brick evaporates. The Brick Industry Association says to fix the water source first, or the efflorescence will return. It generally comes off with a stiff fiber brush and water.

Do you need a permit to repair brick in Las Vegas?

It depends on the size of the repair and which desk covers your lot. Unincorporated Clark County requires no building permit to repair under 32 square feet of stone or brick veneer. The damage must sit less than 6 feet above adjacent grade. The cities run their own permit desks.

That exemption sits in section 22.02.190 of the county’s building administrative code. The Clark County Building Department covers Paradise, Spring Valley, Enterprise and the other unincorporated towns.

Inside Las Vegas city limits, the city’s homeowner guide gives a simple general rule. A permit is required if you open up the interior or exterior walls of the structure. The guide calls itself a guide only and not all inclusive. So we confirm a repair with the city desk.

Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City each run their own desks. We check the rule for your parcel before work starts. When a permit applies, the local fee schedule sets the fee.

When does a crack in brick need an engineer first?

A crack needs an engineer first when it shows the structural signs the Brick Industry Association lists. Those include cracks wider than 0.075 inch, cracks through several bricks and stepped or diagonal cracks. Hairline cracks on a few bricks are typically cosmetic, one cost guide notes.

The Association’s list goes on: widespread spalled brick, rust on lintels or shelf angles, and brick moving out of plane. It says structural issues generally call for an investigation by a professional engineer. The engineer finds the cause and recommends the repair method.

From there, the cost follows the engineer’s plan. We do the masonry repair to that plan and price it line by line. For scale, 0.075 inch is 2 millimeters.

Should you repair the brick or rebuild it?

Repair while the damage stays in one area and the rest of the brick is sound. One guide puts full brick restoration at $5,000 to $35,000, the top of the repair scale. A brick mailbox replacement lists at $900 to $1,800, against $150 to $750 to repair one.

For mortar, the National Park Service prefers repointing only the areas that need work. When 25 to 50 percent or more of a wall needs work, a full repoint may be more cost effective. A full repoint can also make sense when the wall needs scaffolding.

A brick wall or column knocked out of line, or a mailbox broken off its base, may need rebuilding. That is new brick work, priced like the brick walls, columns and mailboxes we build.

How do you get a price for your brick repair?

Send photos of the damage, the rough size of the area and how high it sits. We look at the brick and the joints, and at what caused the damage. Then we send a free written estimate, with repointing, brick replacement and cleaning as separate lines.

A full brick mailbox replacement lists at $900 to $1,800, including removing the old one. After a car strike, we write an itemized estimate against the adjuster's scope or your claim photos.
Can you match old brick and mortar color?
We work to match both, and the brick comes first. The Brick Industry Association says locating matching brick may take considerable effort. It suggests checking the match on a sample panel. Most masons color-match mortar at the job site. A lab color-match analysis lists at $150 to $325 in one national guide.
Do I need a permit to repair brick or stone veneer in Las Vegas?
Not for a small repair in unincorporated Clark County. The county exempts repairs under 32 square feet of stone or brick veneer. The damage must sit less than 6 feet above adjacent grade. Inside Las Vegas city limits, the city requires a permit when work opens up the walls of the structure. We confirm the rule for your parcel.
Is a crack in my brick wall serious?
A hairline crack on a few bricks is typically cosmetic, one cost guide notes. The Brick Industry Association lists some cracks as structural signs. Those include cracks wider than 0.075 inch, cracks through several bricks, and stepped or diagonal cracks. Structural issues generally call for an investigation by a professional engineer. We then repair the masonry to the engineer's plan.
What is the white residue on my brick?
White residue on brick can be hard water spots or efflorescence. Valley tap water is hard from calcium and magnesium, and its residue forms where water evaporates, like sprinkler spray. Efflorescence is salt left behind when moisture in the brick evaporates. Once the water source is fixed, it generally comes off with a stiff fiber brush and water.
How long does repointing last?
The National Park Service says a good repointing job is meant to last at least 30 years. Its preferred span is 50 to 100 years. It warns that shortcuts lead to repointing again sooner. The Brick Industry Association calls for repointing mortar no stronger in compressive strength than the original mortar.
