An outdoor fireplace turns a Las Vegas backyard into a place people sit on winter nights. We build the outdoor fireplace shell in block, brick and stone, plus fire pits, pizza ovens and indoor fireplaces. Most calls start with a spot in the yard. Someone wants a fire pit in the corner, or a fireplace along the back wall. Others want the old indoor fireplace refaced before the holidays. An outdoor fireplace starts as a block core on a footing. Wood-burning builds get a firebox laid in firebrick, then a throat, a smoke shelf and a flue. Code sizes that flue to the fireplace opening. A round flue needs at least one twelfth of the opening area. A square flue needs one tenth. An undersized flue pushes smoke back at you.
The face sets the look. We finish outdoor fireplaces in brick, in stone, or in stucco over the block. Seat walls off each side give people a place to sit. Stone adds weight, so we size the core and the footing for it first. We cover how a stone face goes on over a block core on its own page.
Fire season here is winter. The normal low at Harry Reid Airport is 39.6 degrees in December and 40.5 in January. About ten nights a year fall to 32 degrees or below. That is the stretch when an outdoor fireplace earns its space in the yard, and September and October are the months to build for it.
A built-in fire pit is a small block ring on a footing. We line the inside with firebrick and face the outside in stone or brick. The cap goes on wide enough to set a drink down. Common sizes run 36 to 48 inches across. Published cost guides list a custom built-in fire pit at $325 to $2,000, before the patio around it.
Clearance drives where the ring lands. The county fire code keeps recreational fires 25 feet from a structure or combustible material. It also keeps outdoor barbecue pits 10 feet from combustible walls or roofs. Summerlin North design guidelines set fire features back five feet from property line walls. We check the rule for your parcel, and the ring often lands on a paver surface set on compacted base.
Yes, and it is closer to a small fireplace than a kitchen oven. A pizza oven is a dome on a hearth, with a chimney at the mouth. The dome and the cooking floor are firebrick set in refractory mortar. Insulation board goes under the floor, and ceramic fiber blanket goes over the dome. Wood-fired ovens run well over 1,000 degrees, so insulation holds the heat in.
A new oven gets cured before anyone cooks in it. That means five fires over about five days, each hotter than the last. The first day stays near 300 degrees. Rushing the cure drives water out too fast and cracks the dome. A factory dome set inside a masonry surround is the faster route. Published guides list a custom built brick pizza oven at $1,500 to $8,000 installed.
A masonry fireplace inside the house follows the same rules as the one outside. Code calls for a firebox lined with firebrick at least two inches thick. The firebrick is laid in medium duty refractory mortar, with joints under a quarter inch. The hearth extension runs 16 inches in front of an opening under six square feet. It runs 8 inches past each side, more on larger openings.
Refacing is the job we see most in older valley homes. We strip the old surround, rebuild the hearth if it has moved, and reset the face. Brick or stone can run to the ceiling, and mantel trim stays six inches off the opening. A chimney company handles the flue before a rebuild. Permits come first. Clark County requires a permit to construct or alter a structure. Its published exemption list does not name fire features. Henderson publishes a submittal checklist for exterior fire features, including BBQ, fireplace, fire pit and outdoor kitchen. Rules differ by city, so we check the rule for your parcel. The county air quality rules cover what you can burn. Section 42 allows small fires for recreation, cooking and warmth. Barbecues and outdoor fireplaces are named there. They cannot create a public nuisance. The same rule requires no air quality permit for a private barbecue pit, grill or outdoor fireplace used to cook. Open burning is prohibited during air pollution episode conditions. Gas and electric go to licensed trades, and we set the stub location for them.
What the feature sits on matters as much as the feature. A fireplace or oven is heavy, so it needs a footing and a slab that carries it. On an existing patio we check thickness and cracking before anything goes up. When the slab is missing or unsound, we pour one, and how we pour a backyard slab covers that work.
